SKANDAL

Dalam Injil hari ini, Yesus memperingatkan terhadap "menyebabkan" [seseorang] untuk berbuat dosa." Kata Kerja Greece asli adalah skandalizein, yang diterjemahkan kepada Bahasa Inggeris "scandal / memalukan" . Perkataan "memalukan" biasanya bererti kemarahan perasaan moral orang lain, ataupun untuk menyinggung perasaan oleh beberapa perilaku yang tidak tepat atau tidak konvensional. Tetapi dalam Alkitab, untuk menyebabkan seseorang tersesat atau jatuh atau menyebabkan seseorang untuk berbuat dosa.

Dalam konteks Injil, untuk "dosa" bererti jatuh jauh dari Yesus. Untuk memalukan seseorang bererti menyebabkan orang itu kehilangan / imannya.

Yesus memberikan amaran ini terutama ditujukan kepada mereka yang menyebabkan mikroi ( "anak-anak kecil") yang percaya kepada-Nya .

Para mikroi bukanlah anak-anak yang mungkin mudah tersinggung dengan contoh buruk orang dewasa, mereka bukan pengikut Yesus dewasa yang kadang-kadang dia memanggil anak-anak (Mrk 10:24; Mat 11:25).

Mereka adalah orang yang mengejar pangkat dan kehormatan. Ia mungkin berusaha untuk menghalang orang-orang ini daripada melaksanakan iman dalam Yesus, menyebabkan mereka tidak setia kepada-Nya.

Yesus memberi amaran keras dengan demikian secara jelas ditujukan kepada mereka yang melakukan dosa skandal digarisbawahi oleh hukuman: sebuah batu kilangan diikat di leher pelaku saat ia dilemparkan ke dalam laut. Hal ini tidak akan hilang saat para murid yang akan mendengar hukuman tersebut oleh orang Rom yang tenggelam para pemimpin pemberontakan di kedalaman Laut Galilia.

Amaran tentang tangan, kaki, dan mata menekankan pentingnya untuk kita tetap setia kepada-Nya.

Yesus menunjukkan bahawa tak peduli betapa menyakitkan, haruslah kita berusaha dan tetap untuk setia kepada-Nya kerana tiada yang lebih menyakitkan lagi selain kita menjauhi daripada Yesus, juruselamat kita.

SCANDAL

In today's Gospel, Jesus' warns against "causing [someone] to sin." The original Greek verb is skandalizein, from where the English "scandal/scandalize" comes. To "scandalize" usually means to shock or outrage the moral feelings of others, or to offend by some improper or unconventional conduct. But in the Bible, to scandalize means primarily to cause someone to stumble or fall, to cause someone to sin. In the context of the Gospel, to "sin" means to fall away from Jesus. To scandalize someone means to cause that person to lose his/her faith.

Jesus' warning is particularly directed to those who cause the mikroi ("the little ones") who believe in him to stumble. The mikroi are not children who might easily be scandalized by the bad example of adults; they are rather adult followers of Jesus whom he sometimes calls children (Mk 10:24; Mt 11:25). They are of little account to those who run after rank and honor. The "great ones" (the mighty, influential, learned) might seek to prevent these people from exercising their faith in Jesus, causing them to rupture their loyalty to him. Jesus' stern warning is thus explicitly addressed to them. The grievousness of the sin of scandal is underlined by its punishment: a millstone is tied around the offender's neck as he is thrown in the sea. This would not be lost upon the disciples who would have heard of such punishment inflicted by the Romans who drowned the leaders of the insurrection in the depths of the Sea of Galilee.

The severe punishment and Jesus' warning about the offending hand, foot, and eye underscore the importance of remaining loyal to him. Surely Jesus does not want to lead a band of maimed, crippled, and blind followers - and no one suggests that the words of Jesus are to be taken literally. Still, Jesus points out that no matter how painful, efforts to ensure our loyalty to him are far less painful than the tragedy of being separated from him in the life to come. For to lose Jesus is to lose everything.
